Dataset download
The full derived name/gender dataset behind DearWho, free to download as CSV or JSON, with source-level provenance so you know exactly which licence applies to which row.
What this is
One row per given name: the gender verdict, a male probability, a confidence level, the top country, US Social Security birth counts where available, whether the name is indexed on the site, and a provenance column. 70,499 names in the current release.
Upstream sources
- nam_dict — Joerg Michael's "gender.c" first-name dictionary, about 44,000 names across 55 countries/regions. Licence: GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) 1.2 or later.
- US Social Security Administration baby names, 1880-2017, aggregated per name. Licence: public domain (US federal government work).
- Chinese-Names-Corpus (wainshine), a character-level gender model for Chinese given names. Licence: Apache License 2.0.
The provenance column
Every row carries a provenance value — nam_dict, ssa, nam_dict+ssa, or zh-corpus — naming which upstream source(s) determined that row. Rows tagged nam_dict or nam_dict+ssa are derivative of a GFDL-licensed work and must stay under the GFDL if you redistribute a modified copy; rows tagged ssa are US public domain; rows tagged zh-corpus draw on the Apache-2.0-licensed corpus. This is the single most important column if you plan to reuse or relicense any part of this data.
The GFDL obligation
This dataset (or any part of it derived from nam_dict) is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License, version 1.3 or later, with no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts and no Back-Cover Texts. Any copy you redistribute — modified or not — must remain under the GFDL and carry the licence text. Once you distribute more than 100 copies, you must also make a Transparent (source) copy available to recipients; the CSV and JSON files below are already a Transparent format.
